Suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sheikh Shahjahan on Tuesday broke down after meeting his daughter following a court hearing in West Bengal's Basirhat.

Shahjahan was produced before a local court by Central Bureau of Investigation sleuths in Basirhat. While coming out of the court, he glimpsed his daughter and dissolved into tears.

A video of the incident showed Shahjahan sitting inside a police van and wiping his tears after a brief interaction with his daughter.

Shahjahan, a former TMC strongman, was accused of sexual violence and land grab by several women in West Bengal's Sandeshkhali. He was arrested on February 29, after 55 days on the run, in connection with a case related to the attack on Enforcement Directorate officials.

Shahjahan's arrest came three days after the Calcutta High Court criticised the state police for the delay in taking action against the TMC leader, stating that "he should be arrested".

Following his arrest, the West Bengal Police transferred his custody to the CBI.

After the video of Shahjahan crying went viral on social media, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya took a jibe at the former TMC leader.

Calling him a "poster boy" of Mamata Banerjee, Malviya said that Shahjahan was weeping like an "inconsolable child".

"The swag has disappeared. Mamata Banerjee’s poster boy - rapist Sheikh Shahjahan is weeping like an inconsolable child. Criminal Anubroto Mondal is in jail. This is the fate that awaits the likes of Saokat Mollah, Jehangir Khan and others, who have unleashed a reign of terror across Bengal. No one will come to save them when law catches up. Not Mamata Banerjee for sure. She couldn’t even save her ministers. The clock is ticking. #Sandeshkhali," Malviya said in a post on the microblogging site X.
