Meta representatives appeared before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Electronics and Information Technology after questions were raised over the temporary removal of a video featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Facebook.
Sources said Meta officials expressed regret over the incident and indicated they were prepared to issue an apology. However, some BJP members of the committee maintained that an apology alone would not be sufficient, arguing that accountability should be established and those responsible for the decision should be identified. They also called for appropriate action if any wrongdoing was found.
The committee meeting followed the Centre's decision to summon senior Meta executives to explain the incident. S. Krishnan, Secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, had earlier said the government had asked the company to provide an explanation at the highest level. He added that Meta informed the government it had introduced additional safeguards for accounts belonging to prominent public figures to reduce the likelihood of similar incidents.
