In September 2025, India lost a legendary Assamese singer, Zubeen Garg, in an unfortunate swimming accident in Singapore. The entire country mourned the loss of the Ya Ali singer. Now, months after his demise, his wife, Garima Garg, opened up emotionally about the mindset he had in the years before his death. Recently, she attended an event where she recalled their conversations. She went on to reveal the late singer’s biggest fear.
Zubeen Garg’s wife talks about his fear
Nearly six months after the passing of the singer, his wife was seen gracing the Panchayat Aaj Tak Assam event. According to her, Zubeen Garg would often talk about time being his biggest fear, reflecting his deep understanding of how fleeting life truly is. She said, “Abhi kuch saalon se he (Zubeen Garg) used to say ‘mujhe agar kabhi kisi cheez se darr hai toh that is – Time."
She further shared that she never completely understood the reason behind his feelings, but believes they may have been linked to the personal losses he went through within a short period. Garima further continued, “I don’t know why, may be he got a call from inside or that was a heavenly connection he felt probably because he lost his mother, his sister and best friend untimely. Within a short period of time, he lost so many people, he faced so many incidents, that is so unfortunate for his life."
The singer died on September 19, 2025, while swimming in Singapore during his visit as a cultural brand ambassador for the North East India Festival. Although Singapore authorities initially found no evidence of foul play, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma later asserted that the death was not an accident but “plain and simple" murder.
The Assam government then set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the circumstances surrounding Zubeen’s death. A case was registered under several sections, including criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and causing death by negligence. Murder charges were also added to the investigation as authorities continue to examine the case.
