Amid a massive outrage over YouTuber and Podcaster Ranveer Allahabadia’s controversial remarks at ‘India’s Got Latent’ show, the government is in no mood to let the issue go. As people got angry over the inappropriate content of the show, government sources said that whatever action has to be taken will be taken but as per IT rules.
The IT rules say that action can be taken in those cases where “language, which people may find offensive, include use of expletives, including those with sexual innuendos. Government sources said that the idea is not to control content creation or freedom to express but to ensure that all social media platforms follow self regulation.
A top ministry official said, “We understand the new age and the new needs. But one must understand that we are a sensitive country and often get feedback from people that since the YouTube, OTT platforms is easily accessible to all age groups, one has to be careful and mindful."
This is the reason why not just the performers and show producers are liable to face strict actions but the YouTube, which broadcasts it, too will be considered equally culpable. That’s why NHRC has sent a notice to a YouTube representative in India.
The new criminal laws or the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has strict rules. Meanwhile, an FIR has been registered in Assam under IT Act, which mentions outraging modesty of women.
OTT and social media platforms have been under scanner for quite some time. While the government has made it clear that it opposes censorship, it has also decided to take cognisance of many who have expressed concerns over easy accessibility of OTT, social media through phones, irrespective of age of audience. Ranveer Allahabadia and the ‘India’s Got Latent’ have reignited the matter.
