A tourist from Washington was allegedly raped at a homestay in Kodagu district of Karnataka, police said on Wednesday.
Two persons have been arrested in connection with the incident, including the prime accused, a worker at the homestay who is reportedly from Jharkhand, and the owner of the facility.
According to police, the accused assaulted the woman inside her room at the homestay at the popular tourist spot.
The owner, who became aware of the incident, did not extend any assistance to the woman. Instead, he allegedly confined the American tourist for three days, seizing her mobile phone, and threatening her to prevent her from filing a complaint.
The incident is said to have taken place about a week ago. The woman later travelled to Mysuru, where she contacted US authorities and reported the crime. Acting on inputs from the US Embassy, Karnataka Police registered a case and launched an investigation.
Kodagu Superintendent of Police confirmed the development, saying that both accused have been arrested and remanded to judicial custody till May 3.
