Republic Day 2026: As India prepares to mark Republic Day in 2026, many people are asking why this year’s celebration is referred to as the 77th Republic Day and not the 78th. Though this confusion arises frequently, the explanation is straightforward once the counting method is understood.
India officially became a republic on January 26, 1950, when the Constitution of India came into effect, replacing the Government of India Act, 1935, and establishing India as a sovereign democratic republic. That day itself was observed as India’s first Republic Day — meaning the count began in 1950, not the following year.
Each subsequent January 26 adds one to the count:
January 26, 1951 was the second Republic Day
January 26, 1952 the third
January 26, 2025 marked the 76th
January 26, 2026 is the 77th Republic Day
The confusion often stems from counting the number of years passed rather than how many times the event has been celebrated. Republic Day is tallied by the number of observances, similar to how Independence Day (August 15) is counted since 1947.
Republic Day celebrates India’s transition from colonial rule to a republic governed by its own Constitution. It showcases the country’s constitutional identity, democratic values, and cultural diversity through a grand parade in New Delhi.
Like every year, the Republic Day parade will take place in New Delhi at Kartavya Path, the venue of the iconic annual parade that honours the nation’s democratic heritage.
The theme for the 2026 Republic Day celebration centres on “Vande Mataram" and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat" initiative, reflecting patriotic spirit and a focus on self-reliance. This year, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa have been invited as chief guests.
The Republic Day Parade will be held on January 26, 2026, while the Beating the Retreat Full Dress Rehearsal will take place on January 28, followed by the Beating the Retreat ceremony on January 29.
