India Tightens Immigration Rules: Foreign Nationals Must Register Before 180-Day Stay Limit

The Home Ministry has amended immigration rules, requiring eligible foreign nationals to complete registration before the end of their 180-day stay instead of after it expires.

The Central Government has introduced key changes to India's immigration framework, making it mandatory for certain foreign nationals to complete their registration before the expiry of 180 days from their arrival in the country if they intend to extend their stay.

The amendment, notified by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), revises provisions under the Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025. The move is aimed at strengthening compliance, improving monitoring of foreign visitors and streamlining immigration administration.

Under the earlier system, eligible foreign nationals were allowed to register within 14 days after completing 180 days in India. The revised rules remove this grace period and require registration to be completed any time before the 180-day limit expires.

The change applies to foreigners whose visa conditions permit a stay of up to 180 days and who wish to remain in India beyond that period. Officials say the revised timeline will help authorities maintain more accurate records of foreign nationals residing in the country and reduce compliance-related delays.

The notification is part of the broader immigration framework introduced under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, which replaced several older laws governing the entry, stay and registration of foreign nationals in India. The legislation seeks to simplify immigration regulations while strengthening national security and administrative oversight.

The latest amendment also includes provisions related to reporting requirements involving foreign nationals and clarifies certain registration procedures. According to government notifications, authorities are increasingly focusing on digitised monitoring and improved coordination among immigration agencies.

India has been modernising its immigration infrastructure in recent years through technology-driven systems and online registration services. The government recently approved significant investments to upgrade visa, immigration and foreigner-tracking mechanisms across the country.

For foreign visitors, students, professionals and long-term residents affected by the rule, the key takeaway is clear: registration must now be completed before the 180-day deadline, rather than after crossing it.

Immigration experts advise eligible foreign nationals to check their visa conditions carefully and complete registration formalities well in advance to avoid non-compliance issues or disruptions to their stay in India.

What Is FRRO Registration and Who Needs It?

FRRO stands for Foreigners Regional Registration Office, a system used by the Government of India to monitor and regulate the stay of foreign nationals in the country.

Depending on visa category and duration of stay, certain foreign visitors are required to register with immigration authorities and provide details such as their address, visa information and purpose of stay.

The latest amendment does not create a new registration requirement. Instead, it changes the timeline by which eligible foreigners must complete the process. Those planning to remain in India beyond the prescribed period must now register before the 180-day limit is reached.

The government says the revised rule will improve compliance and strengthen immigration monitoring while making the registration process more predictable for both authorities and foreign visitors.
