Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia would continue “uninterrupted shipments” of fuel to India during the press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Friday (Dec 5). This comes as India faces heavy US pressure to stop buying oil from Moscow.
“Russia is a reliable supplier of oil, gas, coal, and everything that is required for the development of India’s energy,” Putin told the press conference. “We are ready to continue uninterrupted shipments of fuel for the fast-growing Indian economy.”
Addressing Putin as “my friend”, PM Modi also thanked him for his “unwavering commitment towards India.” He added that “energy security has been a strong and important pillar of the India-Russia partnership.” He also lauded time-tested ties between New Delhi and Moscow.
“We have agreed on an economic cooperation program until 2030,” PM Modi said after officials exchanged several key agreements, including on health, chemicals, jobs, and shipping.
“This will ensure that our trade and investment are diversified, balanced, and sustainable,” he said.
Putin also announced that Russia is building India’s largest nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu’s Kudankulam. Earlier on Thursday (Dec 4), Russia’s state-run nuclear corporation delivered the first consignment of fuel for the third reactor at the power plant.
Earlier this year, US President Donald Trump imposed 50 per cent tariffs on Indian goods, citing New Delhi’s Russian oil imports, saying it helps fund the war in Ukraine. Meanwhile, reports suggested that US officials are expected to arrive in New Delhi next week to hold trade talks.
