The US Secret Service late on Sunday shot an armed man outside the White House following a confrontation. President Donald Trump was not in the White House at the time of the incident as he was spending the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.

Local authorities tipped Secret Service officials on Saturday that a suicidal person may be travelling to Washington from Indiana, the Secret Service said, adding that the suspect's car was found a block from the White House. They also saw the man on foot, which matched their description.

The confrontation occurred near the intersection of 17th Street and F Street NW - less than a five-minute walk from the White House, Sky News reported.

The man, whose identity was not known, brandished a firearm as officers approached him and shots were fired shortly after midnight (local time). He was taken to an area hospital and his condition was not known, the Secret Service said.

"Secret Service personnel were involved in a shooting following an armed encounter with a person of interest shortly after midnight on March 9 at 17th and G Streets NW," Secret Service Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi wrote on X.

The DC Metropolitan Police's Internal Affairs Division was probing the incident.

In August 2020, a 51-year-old man was shot by Secret Service officials while Trump, in his first term, was giving a press conference inside the West Wing, The New York Post reported.

The suspect fired shots towards the White House before "running aggressively" towards Secret Service agents who shot the gunman in the torso.

Trump was temporarily evacuated from the White House press briefing room but later returned.
