The Board of Control for Cricket In India (BCCI) announced a 15-man squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa on Sunday, November 23. KL Rahul was named the captain of the 15-man squad, which also features veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
KL Rahul, who has led India in 12 ODIs between 2022 and 2023, will lead the team in regular skipper Shubman Gill's absence. Gill was ruled out of the ODI series, starting November 29, due to a neck injury he suffered during a Test match against South Africa in Kolkata earlier this month. Gill also missed the ongoing second Test between the two sides in Guwahati.
The senior selection committee, chaired by Ajit Agarkar, has decided to hand the captain's armband to Rahul even as they had the option of appointing Rohit Sharma as the stand-in captain for the series. Rohit led India until the Champions Trophy before the management elevated Shubman Gill to the role.
The first ODI of the three-match series will be played in Ranchi on November 30. The second and third matches will be played in Raipur and Visakhapatnam on December 3 and 6, respectively.
India have recalled Ravindra Jadeja to the ODI squad after he was not picked for the Australia tour last month. He has replaced Axar Patel, who has most likely been rested for the series.
