India men’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has endorsed MS Dhoni for taking his job one day. In a RevSportz event on Monday (March 16), he was asked about Dhoni’s social media message after India won the 2026 T20 World Cup, where the Chennai Super Kings legend said smiles looked good on Gambhir.

Gambhir said he wishes that one day, the roles could be reversed, with him writing a congratulatory message and Dhoni being the one smiling in the dugout.

“Good on him to come and watch the World Cup final. Good on him to ask me to smile, and I wish one day he could be in my position, and I can write the same thing, and hopefully, he can smile from the dugout," Gambhir said at the event.

This newfound publicly expressed love between the two Indian legends has been a breath of fresh air. For years, fans have wondered about their relationship, especially due to Gambhir’s incessant digs at Dhoni’s popularity throughout his time as a pundit before taking up the head coaching job in 2024.

Just like Gambhir before 2024, Dhoni has no coaching experience. His only official work with the Indian team was as a short-term mentor during the 2021 T20 World Cup, where the team was knocked out in the group stage. However, many in the cricketing circles believe that after retiring from CSK as a player, he would eventually take a mentoring role at the franchise.

Currently, Gambhir seems close to impregnable in the job. He’s the only Indian coach to win two ICC trophies, and despite his troubles in Test cricket, he would likely stay as the coach even beyond the 2027 ODI World Cup, if he chooses to. Dhoni, meanwhile, is expected to play the upcoming IPL 2026 season for CSK, when their campaign kicks off against Rajasthan Royals on March 30.
