The incident took place in Lakhisarai district on Monday when the victims were returning home from the Chhath Puja ghat.

The police have detained four associates of the accused for interrogation in this regard. Aashish was absconding.

Aashish allegedly committed the crime as he suspected that his wife Durga Jha was having an illicit relationship with someone. The accused had eloped with Durga around five years ago and the two got married. But about one year ago, Durga returned to her parents. Aashish wanted Durga to return to him, but her family members were not ready.

Around 10 days back, Aashish had an argument with his in-laws over the issue. That seems to be the reason of attack on them, police said. The deceased were identified as Chandan Jha (31) and his brother Rajnandan Jha (40). They died on the spot, while their sister, father and wives have been admitted to PMCH in a critical condition.

The injured have been identified as Durga Jha (24), her father Shashi Bhushan Jha (60) and sisters-in-law Lovely Devi (38) and Priti Devi (35). The family belongs to ward number 5 of Punjabi Colony. Munger DIG Sanjay Kumar said the incident was related to an illicit love affair. “The accused is absconding, but will be arrested soon,” he said.

Lakhisarai SP Pankaj Kumar said the incident took place between 7.30 and 8.30 am under Kawaiya police station area. “Aashish had left a 10-page note behind, accusing Durga of having an affair with someone else and that’s why she did not want to live with him. The police have recovered the weapon used in the killing,” he said. The leader of opposition in the state assembly, Vijay Kumar Sinha, demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident. A BJP delegation also met the victims at the PMCH.
