A 65-year-old woman was allegedly raped on the premises of a government hospital in Karnataka's Chikkaballapur district, the police said on Thursday. The accused, 25, who also came to the hospital for treatment, has been arrested.
The incident happened at 2 am on Wednesday. The woman had come from a village to the hospital for treatment. As it got late, she decided to stay there overnight.
The woman was resting on the hospital premises. Upon finding her alone, the accused, Irfan, raped her, the police said.
Hearing her cries for help, some people in the hospital rushed to the scene and rescued the woman. They also caught hold of the accused and handed him over to the police.
Chikkaballapur Superintendent of Police Kushal Chouksey confirmed the incident.
"The woman had come to the hospital for treatment. She was on hospital premises. During this time, a person raped her. The accused has been arrested and sent to custody," he said.
Chouksey highlighted that the crime happened on the campus, not inside the hospital.
"Prime facie, it looks like rape. A case has been registered under Section 64 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (rape)," Chouksey said.
The woman is currently receiving treatment at the hospital. Further investigation is underway.
The incident comes amid nationwide outrage by the medical fraternity over the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor inside Kolkata's RG Kar hospital.
