According to authorities, the policy aims to realign the army's leadership with current and emerging operational challenges, both in internal and external dimensions.

The new policy revision will expand promotional prospects for officers, especially those at the Major General rank. Officers approved in the 'Staff' division will be eligible for promotion within the same division.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to satisfy the career aspirations of officers across all branches and services, ensuring a more equitable distribution of promotion opportunities and reinforcing a culture of meritocracy.

The existing human resource management practices within the Indian Army have been based on a variety of policies that, according to the Army, lacked consistency across different selection boards.
