Patna, Bihar — In a shocking repeat of violence, BJP leader and former Kisan Morcha president Surendra Kewat, 52, was shot dead by unidentified attackers on a motorcycle late Saturday night in Sheikhpura village, Patna district. The attack, which happened under the Pipra police station in the Punpun block, marks the second killing of a prominent BJP figure in Patna within 10 days.
What Happened ?
According to police, Kewat was shot four times while returning from his farm near the Bihta–Sarmera State Highway. Witnesses said two men on a bike fired at him from close range before fleeing. Locals rushed him to AIIMS Patna, where he died during treatment.
Where and when ?
The shooting took place near Sheikhpura village, just a few kilometers from Kewat’s home and farm. He had gone there after dinner to switch off a water pump used for irrigation.
Who was Surendra Kewat ?
Surendra Kewat was a well-known figure in Bihar’s BJP and the former president of the Punpun BJP Kisan Morcha. A veterinarian and farmer by profession, he stayed active in politics despite holding no current party position. His death follows the killing of businessman and BJP leader Gopal Khemka in Patna on July 4, whose murder was caught on CCTV outside his home near Patna Medical College.
Why is this Significant ?
These back-to-back killings have sparked outrage and raised serious concerns about law and order in Bihar ahead of the assembly elections. Opposition leaders, including RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav, criticized the ruling NDA government, questioning its ability to maintain safety in the state.
What are officials saying ?
DSP of Masaurhi, Kanhaiya Prasad Singh, and Pipra police visited the crime scene, promising quick action. The Forensic Science Laboratory team collected evidence, and police are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby areas. An FIR is pending after a complaint from Kewat’s family.
Reaction of Political Fraternity
Phulwarisharif MLA Gopal Ravidas and former minister Shyam Rajak visited AIIMS to meet Kewat’s family. CPI(ML)L MLA Ravidas condemned the state police, saying the lives of ordinary citizens seem undervalued under the NDA government.
On social media, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav slammed the government, saying, “Now, a BJP leader has been shot dead in Patna! What more can be said? Is anyone in the NDA ready to listen or admit their mistakes?”
He also took aim at the state’s leadership, questioning the roles of the BJP deputy chief ministers.
The murders of Gopal Khemka and Surendra Kewat have shaken Patna's political scene, intensifying security concerns as Bihar approaches election season. Investigations are ongoing, but the pattern of violence has already alarmed many across party lines.
