Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra is facing an arrest warrant after a court in West Bengal ordered her arrest for repeatedly failing to appear in connection with a case over alleged religiously provocative remarks. The Krishnanagar court issued the warrant on Wednesday after considering her continued absence despite multiple directions to appear.
Moitra’s lawyer told the court that the MP would not appear, citing concerns that she could be heckled outside the court premises. The court, however, took a strong view of her repeated non-compliance with its directions.
The case stems from a video message released by Moitra following an incident in which a group of women reportedly gathered outside the court carrying eggs after hearing that the Krishnanagar MP was expected to appear.
The court had previously directed Moitra to appear in connection with the complaint. Her continued absence eventually prompted the magistrate to take a stricter approach.
The latest order now shifts attention to the execution of the arrest warrant and the report sought from the police. The Krishnanagar court has directed that an execution report be submitted by August 28, which is expected to indicate what steps were taken by authorities in implementing the court’s order.
