A shocking crime in the national capital, Delhi, has triggered widespread outrage after a 10-year-old girl was allegedly abducted from a pavement in South Delhi and later found dead. Police have arrested an app-based cab driver in connection with the case and say the accused has confessed during questioning.

According to investigators, the child was sleeping with her parents and siblings on a pavement when she was allegedly taken away in the early hours of Monday. Family members told police that they woke up after hearing the girl's cries and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspect managed to flee.

The incident prompted an immediate police response, with officers launching a search operation that relied on CCTV footage, location tracking and technical surveillance.

Four-Hour Search Leads to Arrest

Police said identifying the suspect was initially difficult because the registration number of the vehicle could not be clearly seen in surveillance footage. Investigators reviewed multiple CCTV cameras and gathered information from ride-hailing platforms operating in the area.

Using GPS data and mobile phone location records, police traced the vehicle to West Delhi and arrested the accused within hours of the complaint being registered.

Police said the accused was later injured during an alleged escape attempt while being taken for investigative proceedings. According to officials, Bablu tried to flee custody, following which police opened fire, hitting him in the leg. He was immediately secured and provided medical treatment. The development has added another layer to a case that has already sparked outrage across Delhi and renewed calls for stronger child protection measures.

Officials described the operation as a coordinated effort involving multiple teams working through the night.

Investigation Reveals Disturbing Details

During questioning, the accused allegedly confessed to abducting the child and causing her death, police said. Authorities have booked him under charges related to kidnapping, sexual assault and murder.

The victim's body was later recovered as part of the investigation. Police have not released additional details as forensic examinations and legal proceedings continue.

Questions Over Background Verification

Investigators have also begun examining the accused's background. According to police, he had previous criminal cases registered against him in Bihar.

The development has raised questions about hiring and verification processes within app-based transport services. Officials indicated that notices may be issued to relevant companies seeking information about background screening procedures followed before onboarding drivers.

Police said the accused allegedly attempted to flee while being taken for investigative procedures related to the case. During the incident, he sustained a leg injury and was subsequently secured by officers.

Authorities said the matter is also being documented as part of the ongoing investigation.
