Actor R Madhavan, has been conferred with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, as part of the Padma Awards 2026 announced on the eve of Republic Day. The award recognises his significant contribution to Indian cinema across languages and decades.

According to PTI, the Rang De Basanti actor said, “I accept the Padma Shri with profound gratitude and humility. This honour, bestowed upon me, is beyond my wildest dreams, and I receive it on behalf of my entire family, whose constant support and faith have been my greatest strength.”

Emphasising the weight of the recognition, he added, “I consider this not just an award, but a responsibility. I promise to carry this honour with dignity, sincerity, and a deep sense of commitment to the values it represents.”
Madhavan also acknowledged the role played by his mentors, well-wishers and audiences over the years, crediting them for shaping his journey in cinema.

Soon after the announcement, the news was also shared on social media by his family. Madhavan’s wife, Sarita Birje, posted about the Padma Shri honour on Instagram, while his son, swimmer and actor Vedaant Madhavan, also shared the official announcement on his account.

Madhavan is among 131 individuals named in the Padma Awards 2026 list, which includes five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan and 113 Padma Shri recipients. Other prominent awardees this year include singer Alka Yagnik and Malayalam cinema icon Mammootty.

Madhavan was last seen in Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar, alongside Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Sara Arjun and Gaurav Gera. Released in December 2025, the film’s second part is slated to hit theatres on March 19.
