The recently released trailer of the horror-comedy Sardaar Ji 3, featuring Diljit Dosanjh and Neeru Bajwa, has ramped up anticipation ahead of its June 27 release. This time around, fans are thrown for a loop—Diljit’s casting alongside popular Pakistani actor Hania Aamir (as well as Nasir Chinyoti, Daniel Khawar and Saleem Albela) ahead of an India release is stirring a big controversy.
Sharing the trailer on social media, Diljit clarified that it is releasing overseas only. He wrote, “Sardaar Ji 3 Releasing 27th June OVERSEAS Only 🌍 FADH LAO BHOOND DIAN LATTAN."
The studio also shared the poster and wrote, “We’re excited to announce that Sardaar Ji 3 will be releasing overseas on 27th June! However, the India release will be held back for now. We truly appreciate your love and patience, and we’ll be sharing the India release date very soon. Stay tuned for updates we can’t wait for you all to experience the film on the big screen!"
Despite releasing exclusively overseas, the trailer sparked criticism on social media. One fan wrote, “Nation comes first—feeling let down to see Diljit so cozy with Pakistani co-stars." Another commented, “Didn’t expect this from Diljit post-Pahalgam—where’s the line?"
These concerns trace back to recent tensions between India and Pakistan. In April 2025, a terror attack in Pahalgam and India’s consequential Operation Sindoor drew strong nationalistic reactions. In the wake of those events, the Indian film industry maintained a hard stance—Pakistani artists remain banned from working in India after the 2019 Pulwama attack, when the All Indian Cine Workers Association pushed for a complete ban. Instagram accounts of Pakistani actors were also blocked in India during that heightened period.
Furthermore, last week the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) sharply condemned Diljit’s choice, warning he might face industry sanctions for collaborating with Pakistani artists. The actor has yet to issue a public response.
Nonetheless, the trailer’s debut has elevated fan excitement. Diljit returns as the ever-stylish ghost hunter, complete with trademark wit and flair. With the controversy brewing, the film’s box office fate and public reception could hinge on how Diljit and his team address the nationalist pushback.
Other Controversies Involving Diljit Dosanjh
Coachella flag moment
During his historic Coachella performance in 2023, Diljit was seen gesturing to a fan holding up the Indian flag, which some misinterpreted as him asking them to lower it. This led to backlash online, with critics accusing him of being disrespectful. However, Diljit later clarified that he meant no offence and was simply promoting unity by saying that music doesn’t belong to one country, but to everyone.
Arjun Patiala’s Pakistan release controversy
In 2019, Diljit’s film Arjun Patiala was pulled from its Pakistan release schedule following the Pulwama terror attack. While the move was part of a broader industry decision to halt cultural exchange with Pakistan, the film and its stars were caught in the larger conversation around patriotism.
Filming at Bangla Sahib Gurdwara Scrutiny
In late 2024, Diljit faced criticism for shooting within Delhi’s sacred Bangla Sahib Gurdwara—a space where photography and filming are strictly prohibited. Critics pointed out that such access was a privilege unusual for ordinary visitors.
Ticket Pricing Backlash During Dil‑Luminati Tour
During his 2024 Dil‑Luminati India Tour, fans and influencers criticized ticket prices that ranged from Rs 1,499 to Rs 19,999. Many felt mid-tier tickets were not affordable for regular fans, triggering a debate on accessibility and pricing ethics.
