Born into music

Bhosle was born on September 8, 1933, in Goar, Sangli, in Maharashtra, to Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and his wife, Shevanti. Pandit Deenanath a classical singer and actor, who passed away when Asha Bhosle was nine.

Subsequently, the family moved to Kolhapur and then to Mumbai, where Bhosle and her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar started a career in films as singers and actors. By 1943, she was recording the hit number, Chala Chala Nav Bala for the Marathi film Majha Bal. Bhosle's debut as a singer in Hindi films happened in 1948, with the song Saawan Aaya for the film, Chunariya, though her songs in the film, Andhon Ki Duniya, was released before Chunariya the same year. Her first solo Hindi film song was for Raat Ki Rani in 1949.

Voice of Bollywood's golden era

The legendary singer was considered one of the icons from Bollywood's golden era of music of the fiftes, sixties and the seventies, represented notably by the voices of her sister Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammad Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Manna Dey and Bhosle herself.

She was renowned for her soprano voice and versatility, and her mastery of genres including film music, pop, classical music, bhajans, ghazals, folk, qawwali and Rabindra Sangeet. In her lifetime, Bhosle recorded in over 20 Indian and foreign languages. In 2006, she said that she had recorded over 12,000 songs in her career.

Recipient of cinema's top honour

Bhosle was honoured with Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India's highest award in the field of cinema, in 2000, in recognition of her contribution to Indian music, and Padma Vibhushan in 2008. She won two National Film Awards as Best Female Playback Singer, for Dil Cheez Kya Hai (Umrao Jaan) in 1981 and Mera Kuch Samaan (Ijaazat) in 1987, besides numerous popular awards. Soulful ghazals to cabaret anthems

Bhosle's career was marked by her wide range, from soulful ghazals to pulsating cabaret numbers. Her collaboration with OP Nayyar produced gems like Aao Huzoor Tumko (Kismat), while her timeless hit Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko (Yaadon Ki Baraat) with RD Burman remains a romantic anthem.

She brought sensuality to tracks such as Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja (Caravan) and Yeh Mera Dil (Don), influencing the sound of Hindi cinema. She also demonstrated vocal depth in songs like In Aankhon Ki Masti and Dil Cheez Kya Hai (both from Umrao Jaan), showcasing her command over classical music.

Adapting to modern beats

In the 1990s and early 2000s, Bhosle maintained her tempo by adapting to the modern, pop-infused style of the era. Her work with AR Rahman included hits like Tanha Tanha and Rangeela Re (both from Rangeela). Hits such as Zara Sa Jhoom Loon Main (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge) were chart successes. She also released notable Indipop tracks such as Kabhi To Nazar Milao with Adnan Sami.

The British alternative rock band Cornershop dedicated the 1997 international hit Brimful of Asha to her, which topped the UK Singles Chart in February 1998. The song has seen several remixes, including one by Fatboy Slim.
