Amitabh Bachchan wrote on his blog this week that he missed his customary Sunday meet-and-greet because he was on location in Hyderabad, shooting for the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD. He shared a handful of behind-the-scenes images, including one showing him in full Ashwatthama make-up, and apologised to the fans who turned up outside his home despite his prior note.

On set the veteran also reconnected with Kamal Haasan. The two stars embraced as they caught up, a reunion that has excited audiences who last saw them together decades ago. Reports say this schedule features scenes with both actors while the production works through other sequences.

Director Nag Ashwin’s follow-up to the 2024 spectacle continues to center on the mytho-sci-fi world introduced in the first film; early coverage suggests the sequel will give larger arcs to the characters of Karna and Ashwatthama and expand the screen time of some leads. Industry dispatches also indicate Prabhas will return to the franchise, though his portions may be scheduled for a later phase of filming.

An official production update of note: Vyjayanthi Movies has previously confirmed that Deepika Padukone will not be part of the second instalment. The makers said the decision was mutual and stressed the large-scale commitment the project demands. This casting shift has fuelled chatter about who might step into the space and how the sequel’s focus will change as a result.

The first film became a major commercial event, crossing the ₹1,000-crore mark in worldwide gross according to box-office tallies reported at the time, a benchmark that helps explain the high stakes and high anticipation surrounding the sequel.

What this means for audiences: the recent on-set photographs and the posts from Amitabh Bachchan suggest the sequel’s production is actively moving forward and that fans can expect the team to film the two megastars together after a long gap. The makers have not yet announced final release dates or full casting updates beyond the items confirmed above.
