Some places are meant to be visited. Some places are meant to be remembered. And then there are places that quietly change the way you look at life.
For me, that place is Palakkayam Thattu in Kannur, Kerala.
I had seen pictures of Palakkayam Thattu before my visit. Beautiful hills, misty clouds and endless greenery filled those photographs. But no photograph could capture the feeling of actually standing there.
As I travelled towards the hills, the familiar world slowly disappeared. The roads became quieter. The air became cooler. The greenery became deeper. With every turn, I felt myself moving further away from the noise and hurry of everyday life.
And then I reached the top.
Clouds floated around the hills. The cool wind touched my face. Below me, the landscape stretched into the distance, covered in different shades of green.
For a few moments, I simply stood there.
I didn't think about work. I didn't think about deadlines. I didn't even feel the need to look at my phone.
I just watched.
That moment taught me something simple but powerful: we don't always need to go far to find peace; sometimes we just need to stop and notice what is already around us.
The most beautiful part of Palakkayam Thattu was not a particular viewpoint or photograph. It was the feeling of being completely surrounded by nature.
The clouds kept changing. Sunlight appeared and disappeared. The mountains seemed different every few minutes. It felt as if nature itself was telling a story — slowly, silently and without words.
When I finally returned home, I carried back photographs on my phone. But the most valuable thing I brought back was something no camera could capture — a sense of calm.
You may arrive as a tourist.
But you might leave with a memory that stays with you forever.
