Some journeys give us photographs to remember, some give us stories to tell, and some leave us with a feeling that stays long after we return home. For me, Velankanni in Tamil Nadu was all three, and so much more. I have travelled to different places, but no destination has come close to the experience I had there with my family. It was, without a doubt, the best travel experience of my life.
Sometimes, we travel to escape our routines, explore somewhere new, or spend time with the people we love. But occasionally, a journey becomes something much more personal. It changes the way we feel, the way we see the world, and the way we remember a particular chapter of our lives. My journey to Velankanni became that kind of experience.
The Peace I Felt Upon Arriving
There was something about arriving in Velankanni that I found difficult to put into words. I felt peaceful, almost as though I had arrived somewhere I was meant to be. It was not simply the excitement of reaching a new destination with my family. There was a sense of positivity that made the experience feel different from any other trip I had taken.
Velankanni is known for the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health, a place of deep religious significance that attracts pilgrims from across India and beyond. For me, visiting the church and praying there became the most meaningful part of the journey.
I arrived with my own hopes and prayers, and I left with a feeling of renewed positivity. In the period that followed, I began to experience life more positively, and I associated that change with my time in Velankanni and the prayers I had offered there. I cannot fully explain why the experience affected me so deeply, but I know how I felt. Sometimes, the most meaningful parts of a journey are the ones that cannot easily be explained to someone else.
Night Walks That Became Lasting Memories
One of my favourite memories of Velankanni is walking near the church at night.
There was something special about exploring the area after dark, being surrounded by the atmosphere of the pilgrimage town, and sharing those moments with my family. Those walks became more than just a way to explore the destination. They gave me time to take everything in and appreciate being there.
I did not need every moment to be an adventure or every corner to offer a famous attraction. Sometimes, simply walking around a place, observing the people and surroundings, and enjoying the company of family was enough.
Those nights remain among the memories I treasure most. When I think of Velankanni, I do not remember only the church or the fact that I travelled to Tamil Nadu. I remember the feeling of being there: peaceful, happy, and surrounded by an atmosphere that felt full of positivity.
It is remarkable how an ordinary activity, such as taking a walk at night, can become one of the most memorable parts of an entire journey.
Discovering Tamil Nadu Through Its Culture and Food
Another reason Velankanni became so special to me was the opportunity to experience Tamil Nadu's culture and traditions.
Travel is one of the best ways to understand how differently people live across India. We may share a country, but every region has its own languages, customs, food, traditions, and ways of welcoming visitors. Experiencing these differences firsthand makes travelling much more meaningful than simply visiting popular landmarks.
During my trip, I enjoyed trying Tamil Nadu's cuisine and experiencing the local way of eating food served on a leaf. It was a simple experience, but it allowed me to participate in a tradition rather than merely observe it.
There is something wonderful about sitting down to a regional meal and discovering flavours and customs that may be unfamiliar to you. Food becomes a connection to the place, its people, and their everyday lives. It reminds us that culture is not found only in museums or historical buildings. It can be experienced at a dining table, in a local market, or through the smallest everyday practices.
I also enjoyed exploring the coastal area, where vendors offered their goods and added to the lively surroundings. I even got a tattoo from a vendor there, giving me another personal memory to associate with the trip.
These experiences helped me appreciate Velankanni beyond its religious significance. It was a place where faith, family, food, local traditions, and everyday life came together to create an unforgettable journey.
An Unexpected Encounter With Wildlife
As someone who enjoys observing animals and discovering the natural world, I was particularly excited to encounter animals I had not seen in quite the same way before.
During my visit, I came across a wild lizard. It might sound like a small detail in a travel story, but moments like these are part of what makes exploring somewhere new exciting. You never know what you might discover when you pay attention to your surroundings.
A destination is not made memorable only by its most famous attractions. Sometimes, it is the unexpected encounters that make the experience feel personal.
For me, discovering unfamiliar wildlife added another dimension to the trip. It reminded me that every place has its own living world beyond the sights that visitors usually come to see.
That is one of the things I love about travelling: the opportunity to notice something new, learn from it, and carry that discovery home with you.
More Than a Holiday
Looking back, what made Velankanni extraordinary was not any single attraction. It was the combination of everything I experienced there.
I travelled with my family, prayed at a place that meant a great deal to me, enjoyed peaceful night walks, explored the coastal area, tasted regional food, experienced local traditions, and discovered something new in the natural world.
Most importantly, I returned feeling more positive.
After my prayers in Velankanni, I felt that life had begun moving in a better direction. Whether someone understands that feeling through faith, personal reflection, or the emotional impact of a meaningful journey, I believe the experience deserves to be valued for what it meant to me.
Sometimes, a journey arrives at exactly the right moment in our lives. We might not understand its significance while we are travelling, but when we look back, we realise that it became a turning point in our personal story.
Velankanni became that turning point for me.
Why Velankanni Will Always Be My Answer
If someone asked me to name the best place I have ever visited, my answer would be Velankanni. Without hesitation.
There are many beautiful destinations in India, each with its own history, landscape, and culture. I would never claim that everyone must experience a place in the same way I did. But for me, Velankanni offered something that no other destination has managed to match.
It gave me precious memories with my family, an opportunity to experience Tamil Nadu's traditions, moments of discovery, and a deep sense of peace connected to my faith.
Even now, when I think about that journey, I remember how I felt when I arrived and the positivity I carried with me afterwards. That feeling is what makes this place different from every other destination I have visited.
We often measure a holiday by how much we see, how far we travel, or how many photographs we bring home. But perhaps the greatest measure of a journey is what we carry back within ourselves.
I returned from Velankanni with memories I will always cherish and a renewed sense of positivity that made the experience feel life-changing.
I know a place where my favourite memories meet my faith, where simple moments became extraordinary, and where I found a peace that stayed with me long after the journey ended. That place is Velankanni. And no other travel experience in my life has come close.
