Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, while speaking at the ongoing assembly session on Wednesday, cleared the air about water pollution at Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj.
Attacking the Opposition for their remarks on Maha Kumbh, he said, “Those spreading misinformation about Kumbh are causing damage to themselves, People are not ready to accept their misinformation."
He explained, “Misinformation is being spread that Kumbh water quality is deteriorating. Kumbh water is absolutely fine to take a dip. The UP pollution control board is continuously monitoring the cleanliness of the water. All imminent leaders from the country and the world have taken the dip in Maha Kumbh. It is santushtikaran, not tushtikaran taking a dip in Kumbh."
The UP CM’s remarks came a day after the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) raised the issue of severe water quality at various locations in Prayagraj and Opposition leaders commented on the state government’s incompetency to manage the situation.
The CPCB, in its report, said that the water in the Sangam had high faecal coliform levels because of which it failed to meet primary bathing standards.
As per the CPCB, faecal coliform is one of the major indicators of sewage contamination and it should not be more than the permissible limit of 2,500 units per 100 ml.
On February 3, the CPCB filed a report in which it indicated increased levels of faecal bacteria at different places in Sangam, Prayagraj, especially on Shahi Snan days.
