Union Minister's nephew shot dead by brother in Bihar over water dispute

What started as a dispute over water from a tap soon escalated into a physical altercation, with Jayjeet opening fire. Vishwajit died while being taken to the hospital.

At least one person was killed and another injured after a violent dispute over water broke out between two nephews of Union Minister Nityanand Rai in Bihar, police said.

The incident took place in Bhagalpur district's Naugachhia where a firing incident left one brother, Vishwajit, dead and another, Jayjeet, critically injured. Vishwajit’s mother, Hina Devi, also sustained a gunshot wound to her hand.

"As per the information received, one of the injured has died, and the others are under treatment. During the altercation, their mother intervened and was also shot in the hand," senior police officer Prerna Kumar told media.

What started as a dispute over water from a tap soon escalated into a physical altercation, with Jayjeet opening fire. Vishwajit died while being taken to the hospital.

"We were outside when we got the information from others. The most important thing is that this is a very respectable family. There was some dispute between the brothers over a water tap, which led to the shooting," villager Pradeep Kumar told India Today TV.

Confirming that the fight erupted over a tap, senior police officer Prerna Kumar further said, "Prima facie, it appears that a dispute over a tap escalated into gunfire between the two...One shell casing and a bullet have been recovered from the scene."

While Vishwajit's body has been sent for post-mortem, Jayjeet, who is in a critical state, is undergoing treatment at BJP MLC Dr. N.K. Yadav’s hospital.
