Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday issued strict directives ahead of the annual Kanwar Yatra. Stressing on the need to maintain law and order and respect the religious sentiments of devotees.

He instructed officials to ensure that no open sale of meat takes place along the yatra route and that shopkeepers clearly display their names at their establishments, as was mandated in previous years.

CM Yogi warned about the possibility of anti-social elements joining in disguise while mentioning that a huge number of devotees are expected to take part in the yatra. The chief minister also ordered the authorities to ensure security arrangements must be foolproof to prevent any disruptions during the religious procession.

The directives, however, drew sharp political reactions. Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Fakhrul Hasan Chand questioned the practicality and fairness of the restrictions, especially for small vendors and daily wage earners.

“How will those who earn daily to support their families survive if all shops are shut?” he asked. He further argued that if name-display rules are to be enforced, they should apply uniformly to all, not target any specific community.

Backing the chief minister’s stand, UP Minister Jaiveer Singh said that "The Kanwar Yatra is a Hindu religious pilgrimage. There should be no objection to writing names on shops during such a significant event. Since the yatra is tied to religious sentiments, meat shops must remain closed. Hiding one’s name serves no purpose, hence, instructions have been issued for all to display names clearly."

Congress MP Pramod Tiwari acknowledged the importance of providing facilities and security to the Kanwar Yatris, but also reminded the state government of legal boundaries.

"More facilities and more security should certainly be provided to the Kanwar Yatris. But the UP government must also recall the Supreme Court’s guidelines and its clear instructions on such matters. Yogi Adityanath is an experienced Chief Minister, he has held the office for nearly eight years, and he would surely know that the Supreme Court is supreme," Tiwari said.
