Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday appealed for peace and unity in Manipur, stressing that development cannot take place without stability, justice, and truth.

The remarks came during PM Modi’s first visit to Manipur in two years since unrest broke out in 2023. He addressed a public event in Churachandpur after launching development projects.

PM Modi assured the people of Manipur that the Centre stands firmly with them, adding, “I appeal to all organisations to move forward together peacefully, fulfil your dreams, and secure a better future for your children."

Reflecting on the state’s troubled past, PM Modi noted, “Manipur—this land once held hope and dreams, but was also caught in the grip of violence. For development to take place anywhere, peace is essential along with truth and justice."

Earlier in the day, he also met victims of the ethnic violence in Manipur’s Churachandpur.

The victims of the unrest included internally displaced families who lost their homes in the clashes.

Ahead of his scheduled address at Churachandpur’s Peace Ground, he also interacted with children, accepting a bouquet and a painting from them.

During the meeting, he was seen wearing a traditional feathered hat gifted by one of the children.

“The land of Manipur is a land of hope and aspiration. Unfortunately, violence had cast its shadow on this beautiful region. A short while ago, I met those affected who are living in relief camps. After meeting them, I can say with confidence that a new dawn of hope and trust is rising in Manipur. For development, peace is essential," he said.

The Prime Minister’s visit comes amid ongoing ethnic tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which have claimed over 260 lives since May 2023 and displaced nearly 50,000 people.

PM Modi also laid the foundation stone of development projects worth more than Rs 7,300 crore, including road, infrastructure, and women’s welfare schemes.
