Patna NEET Student Death Case: The death of a National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) student in Bihar's capital Patna will now be investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The Bihar government on Saturday (January 31) recommended handing over the investigation of the recent death of a student preparing for the NEET exam to the CBI. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary wrote in a post on the social media platform X on Saturday (January 31), "Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has requested the Government of India for a CBI investigation into the murder case of the NEET student in Patna."
He said that the investigation into the incident should be conducted in a transparent and impartial manner. Politics has heated up over the alleged murder of a NEET student in Patna. The parents of the NEET candidate who died earlier this month have leveled serious allegations against the Bihar Police. On Friday, the family alleged that the state police was trying to suppress the case by denying sexual assault and terming it a case of suicide. There was a huge commotion outside the residence of Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar in Patna. At that time, grieving parents from the neighbouring district Jehanabad came to meet him.
The family claimed they were summoned by the Director General of Police (DGP). The deceased's mother told reporters, "Today, our hope for justice is shattered. The DGP said he's treating the case as a suicide. He also said that if we're not satisfied, he can arrange a meeting with state Home Minister Samrat Choudhary. We are completely devastated." The grieving parents were accompanied by other family members, including the deceased's maternal uncle and their lawyer, S.K. Pandey.
The NEET candidate was preparing for the medical entrance exam. Earlier this month, she was found unconscious in her room at a private girls' hostel in Chitragupta Nagar, Patna, where she was staying for exam coaching. She died in a private hospital on January 11 after being in a coma for several days. The family alleged that she was sexually assaulted and that attempts were being made to hush up the matter.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to investigate the case. Speaking to reporters later, Pandey said, "Only the parents were allowed to meet the DGP. They came out very upset. I don't understand why the DGP is still treating this as a case of suicide without any sexual offense, when forensic tests revealed semen stains on the girl's underwear. Now we will have to go to court because the police are not providing us justice."
The deceased's maternal uncle claimed that while his sister and brother-in-law were returning home after meeting the Director General of Police (DGP), he received a call from a female Deputy Superintendent of Police (SP). She asked him to come to the police station. He alleged, "She said she had learned that I understood the case, so I should meet them alone. But she repeated what the DGP had told the girl's parents. The police are putting so much pressure on us that we have no choice but to commit suicide."
Police investigating the case recently claimed that forensic reports found traces of semen on the student's clothing, which she was wearing when she was taken to the hospital. This latest information points to sexual assault and molestation of the NEET candidate.
"A DNA profile is being created from the semen traces found in the forensic report. It will be matched with the DNA profiles of the arrested accused and other suspects. Therefore, DNA samples are being taken from several people as part of the investigation," a senior police officer told PTI on condition of anonymity.
