A third-year female student at Kolkata's Jadavpur University died on Thursday night after being discovered unconscious near a pond on the campus, officials said.

The student, identified as Anamika Mondal, was chatting with classmates earlier in the evening. Later, she was found lying unresponsive beside the waterbody near Gate No. 4, close to the union room. Fellow students and university staff rushed her to a nearby private hospital, but doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Police from Jadavpur station reached the hospital soon after being informed by the university authorities. An inquiry has been launched, with the exact circumstances leading to her death yet to be determined. Officials said the body would be sent for post-mortem, and further details would follow after preliminary investigation.

The incident has rattled the campus community. Senior faculty members, university officials and representatives of the Arts Faculty Students' Union accompanied students to the hospital.

The tragedy came two years after the death of a 17-year-old first-year Bengali honours student, who fell from the second-floor balcony of the boys' hostel in August 2023 after alleged ragging. That case triggered protests and several arrests.

Kolkata Police sources have confirmed Mondal's death, adding that an official statement will be issued after post-mortem report and initial inquiry.
