Janata Dal (United) chief Nitish Kumar took oath as Bihar Chief Minister for a record 10th time at the historic Gandhi Maidan, Patna on Thursday.
Nitish Kumar on Wednesday staked claim to form the next government in Bihar after being elected the leader of the NDA.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda, Unions Ministers Rajnath Singh and Dharmenndra Pradhan, and chief ministers of at least seven states were present at the swearing-in ceremony.
The NDA, led by the JD(U) and the BJP secured a sweeping majority in the Bihar elections 2025, winning 202 of the 243 assembly seats. The BJP became the single-largest party with 89 seats, the JD(U) won 85, the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) 19, the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) five and the Rashtriya Lok Morcha four.
Before he submits his resignation as head of the outgoing Bihar government, Nitish Kumar will be first elected as leader of the JD(U) legislature party at 11 am today and after that, the leader of the NDA at 3.30 pm. Besides his resignation, the JD(U) supremo will also submit a letter of support from all alliance partners of the NDA to the governor for the formation of the new government.
The JD(U) Legislature Party meeting will take place at the Chief Minister’s House at 11 am, where Nitish Kumar is set to be elected as its leader. The BJP Legislature Party will convene at the state office at 11.30 am to choose its own leader. Later, at 3.30 pm, the NDA Legislature Party will gather in the Central Hall of the Assembly, where MLAs from all five NDA parties are expected to formally elect Nitish Kumar as the alliance’s leader. Following his election, Nitish Kumar will head to Raj Bhavan to submit his resignation as Chief Minister of the outgoing government and stake his claim before Governor Arif Mohammad Khan to form the new government.
A meeting of JD(U) legislators is currently underway at Nitish Kumar's residence to elect the 74-year-old as their leader. After this, the BJP Legislature Party will convene at the state office to choose its own leader. The BJP elected Samrat Choudhary as the leader of its Legislature Party in Bihar, paving the way for him to continue as one of the state’s two deputy chief ministers, Union minister Nityanand Rai confirmed. Vijay Sinha, who also retains his position as deputy chief minister, was named the party’s deputy Legislature Party leader.
More than 2,500 security personnel and 250 police officers have been deployed in Patna and around the Gandhi Maidan, where Nitish Kumar and other ministers of the new NDA government will take oath on Thursday. Authorities said that there is also a complete ban on public entry into the event site until the end of the high-profile ceremony, which will be attended by PM Narendra Modi and other top BJP leaders.
While snipers are deployed at buildings near Gandhi Maidan, the police have also set up a special control room to monitor movements.
In the NDA legislative party meeting, Nitish Kumar was unanimously elected as the legislative leader of the coalition.
"I attended the NDA legislature party meeting held in the Central Hall of the Bihar Legislature," Nitish said after he was back at the Chief Minister's residence after staking claim to the government at the Raj Bhavan.
Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan on Wednesday said the swearing-in of Bihar’s next chief minister will be a grand affair, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in attendance.
“The NDA has achieved a historic victory, and the people of Bihar have reposed their complete faith in the NDA. As grand as this victory is, our swearing-in ceremony, which will also include the presence of the Prime Minister, will be equally grand,” Paswan told the media.
Home Minister Amit Shah will hold separate meetings with JDU and BJP leaders at Hotel Maurya. He will first meet with JDU leaders at Hotel Maurya. After the meeting with JDU leaders, Home Minister Amit Shah will hold a meeting with BJP leaders.

Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao arrived at Raipur Airport as he heads to Bihar to attend Nitish Kumar’s swearing-in ceremony.
He said, “The NDA has achieved a historic victory in Bihar. Today, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar ji and his Council of Ministers will take oath. I have been invited to the ceremony. Both the Deputy Chief Ministers of Chhattisgarh will be attending the Bihar government’s oath-taking event.”

Ramkripal Yadav has been elected MLA from Danapur, Patna. He defeated RJD’s sitting MLA Ritesh Lal Yadav. Shreyashi Singh is the MLA from Jamui. BJP’s Rama Nishad, who became an MLA for the first time, will become a minister. Rama Nishad has won the election from Aurai for the first time.
In the new Bihar Cabinet, BJP’s Prem Kumar is likely to be the next Speaker of the assembly.
The BJP is expected to bring in a majority of new faces while retaining a few senior leaders, including Samrat Chaudhary, Vijay Sinha, Mangal Pandey, and Nitin Naveen. The party is likely to reward new workers for their hard work and dedication by giving them key opportunities in the government.
The list of ministers expected to take oath alongside CM Nitish Kumar includes Deputy CMs Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha. Senior leaders Vijendra Prasad Yadav, Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, Ramkripal Yadav, Mangal Pandey, Nitin Naveen, and Sanjay Singh Tiger are also set to be inducted.
Among new and notable faces, Santosh Manjhi, son of Jitan Ram Manjhi, is likely to join the Cabinet. From the Upendra Kushwaha family, either Snehlata Kushwaha (his wife) or Deepak Prakash (his son) is expected to take oath.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma arrived in Patna to attend Nitish Kumar’s oath-taking ceremony.

Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini arrived at Patna Airport. He will attend the oath taking ceremony of Nitish Kumar as Bihar CM.
