80th Independence Day: PM Modi Sets Out Roadmap for Viksit Bharat 2047

PM Modi outlines a roadmap for ‘Viksit Bharat’ with a focus on self-reliance, AI, economic reforms, energy security and national security, while reiterating his resolve to make India Naxal-free by 2047

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation from the Red Fort on Saturday on the occasion of India’s 80th Independence Day, outlining the government’s priorities for the country’s development towards 2047. The speech focused on self-reliance, economic and institutional reforms, technology, energy security, youth development, national security and the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047.

The celebrations also marked 150 years of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’. For the first time during an Independence Day event at the Red Fort, ‘Vande Mataram’ was rendered as part of the celebrations, which the Prime Minister described as a historic moment.

Modi began his address by remembering the freedom fighters and said their dreams continue to inspire the country. He linked the Independence Day celebrations with the long-term goal of building a developed India by 2047, describing it as a collective objective involving more than 140 crore citizens.

A central theme of the Prime Minister’s speech was the goal of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047, marking 100 years of Independence.

Modi said the country had made significant progress over the past decade in areas including digital transactions, connectivity, household services and infrastructure. He cited an increase in internet users and consumers, a rise in digital transactions and expansion of water and gas connections as indicators of the country’s development trajectory.

Energy security was another major component of the speech. Modi identified critical minerals, energy requirements and data centres as emerging strategic priorities.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the expansion of solar energy, saying India’s solar energy capacity had reached 106 GW.

Modi highlighted infrastructure development as an important component of India’s economic transformation. He said that while only around 30% of the railway network had been electrified over the previous 90 years, the entire railway network had been electrified within the decade that followed.

Calling India’s development journey a ‘Reform Express’, Modi said the country would require another phase of reforms to achieve the objectives set for 2047.

The fifth reform area is defence, reflecting the government's emphasis on strengthening national security and domestic defence capabilities.

The second area is food production and processing. The third focuses on technology and innovation, while the fourth concerns infrastructure and connectivity through initiatives such as Gatishakti, modern highways and inland waterways.

The Prime Minister called for greater global competitiveness among Indian companies.

Youth development featured prominently in the speech. Modi described young people as the biggest beneficiaries of a developed India and highlighted initiatives such as Digital India, Skill India, Khelo India and the National Education Policy.

Modi also linked youth development with sports. He said India would aim to participate in Olympic categories in which it has not previously competed by 2036.

National security was one of the more significant and politically sensitive aspects of the address.

Modi's statement therefore places the objective of eliminating Naxalism within a broader national-security framework. His remarks also underline the government's position that extremist violence and ideological mobilisation must not undermine constitutional institutions.

The Prime Minister announced plans to establish a civil defence network. The proposed network is intended to strengthen preparedness and resilience among civilians in the face of security threats and emergencies.

Modi also raised the issue of women's political representation and referred to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, the legislation providing for reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.

The Prime Minister highlighted India's growing international economic engagement and said the country has ongoing Free Trade Agreement negotiations or arrangements involving more than 40 nations.

Modi also invoked the idea of ‘Nagarik Devo Bhav’, placing citizens at the centre of governance and development.

Towards the end of his speech, Modi urged young people to spend an hour participating in a ‘self-census enumeration’, presenting citizen participation as an important component of nation-building.

Before the address, Modi was received at the Red Fort by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth and Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.

Modi's 80th Independence Day speech combined a long-term development vision with announcements on technology, youth, infrastructure, energy, manufacturing, defence and social participation. The emphasis on becoming self-reliant while strengthening India's role in global supply chains formed a major economic theme.

The proposed expansion of nuclear power, AI training for one crore young people, free online coaching, sporting talent identification and a civil defence network were among the notable announcements.
