Two Indian Navy officers participating in an operational demonstration rehearsal had a narrow escape yesterday when their parachutes became entangled during the descent, causing them to plunge into the water at Rama Krishna Beach in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Despite the dramatic incident, both officers emerged unharmed, thanks to the prompt response of rescue teams.

The mishap occurred during preparations for the Eastern Naval Command’s (ENC) grand Operational Demonstration, set to take place today with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu as the chief guest.

According to sources, the officers, members of the elite MARCOS (Marine Commandos), avoided collision, but their parachutes became tangled mid-air.

A video of the incident showed one officer descending with the national flag while the other’s parachute got entangled, causing both to lose altitude rapidly and fall into the water near the shore.

Fortunately, rescue boats stationed nearby quickly reached the scene and brought the officers to safety. The incident unfolded before a large crowd gathered at the beach to witness the rehearsal, sparking momentary concern but ending on a positive note as both officers were confirmed to be safe and unharmed.

The highly anticipated Operational Demonstration will showcase the Indian Navy’s advanced capabilities through a series of choreographed activities, including high-speed manoeuvres by warships, flying operations by fighters, helicopters, and fixed-wing aircraft, amphibious assaults, live slithering operations, and Combat Free Fall by MARCOS.

The event will also feature unique displays like the Horn Pipe Dance by the Sea Cadets Corps and the Beating Retreat Ceremony by the ENC band, offering a glimpse into the Navy’s discipline and versatility.

The Navy has assured that all safety protocols are being thoroughly reviewed to ensure a seamless and secure event.
