Tinder or Kindle? Supreme Court judge confuses e-book reader with dating app

JJ News Desk

During a recent hearing in the Supreme Court, Justice PV Sanjay Kumar confused Amazon's e-book reader, Kindle, with the dating app Tinder, leading to an amusing exchange in the courtroom.

While presiding over a public interest litigation (PIL) that sought directions to establish rural libraries in villages across the country, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Vikramjit Banerjee informed the court about plans for e-libraries and the digitisation of textbooks.

Justice Sanjay Kumar, in response to this, asked, "Mr ASG, the joy and feeling of turning over a new page, where is it available on those digital readers - what do you call it? Tinder?"

The ASG then corrected Justice Kumar that the name of the device was ‘Kindle’ not ‘Tinder’, Bar and Bench reported.

"Yes. Tinder is a dating app," replied Justice Kumar with a smile.

As the bench, comprising Justice PV Sanjay Kumar and Justice Aniruddha Bose, continued the hearing, ASG Banerjee emphasised the necessity for a shift in traditional consumption methods, highlighting that everything is now accessible in electronic form.

"Nowadays, everything is conveniently available in e-form. Be it the Economist, etc. The way we consumed traditionally has to change, my Lords," he said.

On January 3, the court issued notices to all states and Union territories in response to the plea filed by Advocate-on-Record (AoR) Swati Jindal. The plea called for the establishment of rural libraries to ensure the holistic education and development of children through reading.
