A controversy has erupted at PES University in Bengaluru after a professor allegedly made communal and derogatory remarks toward a Muslim student during a class, sparking widespread criticism.

The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday when a student, identified as Affan, asked permission to briefly leave the classroom to meet someone. According to a video recorded during the session, Dr. Muralidhar Deshpande reacted angrily and allegedly referred to the student as a “terrorist" in front of others.

In the video, the professor is heard shouting, “Sharm nahi aati, tumko (Do you feel no shame)," before adding, “I thought I will be very calm today." Moments later, he is again heard saying, “Terrorist," though the recording includes significant background noise. Students also alleged that the professor made further remarks, blaming “people like him" for the Iran war, claiming Donald Trump would “come and take him away," and telling the student he would “go to hell," media reported.

Following the backlash, the university placed the professor under suspension pending an inquiry. In a letter issued by the Vice Chancellor, the institution confirmed that a student complaint had been received and said the suspension would remain in effect until a detailed investigation is completed.

A student who spoke anonymously claimed that three students who supported the affected student were also suspended for unrelated reasons. The Vice Chancellor said the university trains faculty members on handling classroom situations and noted that the professor involved has been teaching as an adjunct for several years. He added that the full context of the incident is still being examined and emphasized that such an event had not occurred at the institution before.

Meanwhile, the National Students’ Union of India has filed a police complaint, demanding strict action and a public apology from the professor.
