Emergency sirens were tested today at 3 PM in Delhi's ITO area. This is part of a routine safety drill by authorities.

The directorate of civil defence on Friday conducted testing of an air raid siren mounted on the top of the multistorey PWD building at ITO. Testing was initiated at 3:00 pm and was conducted for 15–20 minutes.

The testing of air raid sirens comes during heightened tensions between India and Pakistan with missile attacks and shelling, following the Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in the death of 26 individuals, the majority of whom were tourists, on April 22.

It said that the public must stay calm and avoid panicking during the testing exercise.

Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Verma said sirens will be installed on all the high-rise buildings in Delhi.

He said, "The work of installing sirens in Delhi has started. Sirens will be installed on all the high-rise buildings in Delhi. Its range is 8 kilometres. Starting tonight, 40-50 more sirens will be installed in high-rise buildings in Delhi. We will run it in case of any emergency. We can run it from a single command centre..."

SECURITY TIGHTENED

Strong security was posted at the crucial installations in Delhi today, such as government offices and places with heavy traffic, after India-Pakistan tensions mounted following the Pakistani army's attack on several border areas with drones and missiles on Thursday night (May 8).

A top police officer said that all crucial installations such as government offices, sewage treatment facilities, water treatment facilities, courts, and foreign missions are being secured by mobilising more forces, including paramilitary personnel. Police also tightened vigils at places with high traffic, such as markets, railway stations, malls, parks and Metro stations.

In the midst of the escalating tensions, the leaves of all Delhi Police staff were cancelled on Thursday night.

"Night vigil has been intensified. We will deploy extra force in every sensitive area," an officer said.

All the zones' special commissioners are sitting in with their deputy commissioners to assess the security preparations, police sources said.

"All the DCPS are keeping a close watch on law and order in their jurisdiction. Delhi Police is prepared to tackle any situation," said a police source.
