Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar resigns as Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) following his elections as a Member of the Rajya Sabha (MP).
Nitish Kumar’s resignation from the Bihar Legislative Council has added a fresh twist to state politics, with the move coming just days after his election to the Rajya Sabha on March 16. According to reports, the resignation was submitted through JD(U) leader Sanjay Gandhi and later accepted by Council Chairman Avdhesh Narayan Singh. BJP leader Nitin Nabin also resigned from the Bihar Legislative Assembly around the same time after his own move to Parliament.
The step was taken to comply with the constitutional rule that a person elected to Parliament and a state legislature must give up one seat within 14 days. Reports also say Nitish Kumar is expected to take oath as a Rajya Sabha member in early April, but there is still no official confirmation on when, or even whether immediately, he will step down as Chief Minister.
Political activity inside the ruling alliance has picked up, and reports suggest the BJP is exploring the possibility of having its own Chief Minister in Bihar for the first time, with some party insiders even pointing to an RSS background as a possible preference. Still, no formal decision or public announcement has been made.
JD(U) workers and supporters are said to be uneasy about Nitish Kumar moving away from state politics, while Rural Works Minister Ashok Choudhary has said that both the public and party workers do not want him to leave Bihar’s political stage. That reaction shows how closely Nitish Kumar’s next move is being watched across the state.
With Nitish Kumar preparing for a shift to national politics, Bihar now stands at a crucial crossroads. The upcoming decision on the next Chief Minister will not only determine the state’s immediate political direction but could also redefine its leadership dynamics for years to come. All eyes are now on the ruling alliance as it navigates this transition and charts the path forward.
