Mumbai woke up today to another spell of heavy rains, thunderstorms, and strong winds, marking the fourth consecutive day of downpour that disrupted train services and caused waterlogging in parts of the city.
According to Central Railway, local trains on the Main Line and Harbour Line were running late by 10 to 15 minutes. Dr. Swapnil Dhanraj Nila, Central Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), said waterlogging was reported at a few stations, including Kurla, Chembur, and Tilaknagar, which affected train movement.
On the Main Line, delays of 8 to 10 minutes were reported on routes such as Karjat to Kalyan, Kasara to Kalyan, and Kalyan to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. Reduced visibility due to heavy rains was cited as the main reason.
To deal with the situation, Central Railway deployed additional engineering staff during the evening peak hours, especially around 6:30 pm, which coincided with high tide. Teams have been stationed at waterlogging-prone spots with pumps and other equipment to remove excess water.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that engineers, pump operators, health staff, and emergency response teams were working on the ground. The civic body also urged residents not to believe in rumours and to step out only if absolutely necessary. Citizens were advised to call the BMC control room helpline– 1916 in case of emergencies.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and Dahanu, warning of very heavy rainfall. Waterlogging has already led to traffic jams and disruptions in commuting. In response, the BMC declared a holiday for all schools, including afternoon shifts.
Apart from Mumbai, several regions across Maharashtra have been placed under weather alerts. An orange alert has been issued for Borivali, Mulund, Powai, Santa Cruz, Chembur, Worli, Colaba, Alibag, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, Satara, Pune, Nashik, Dhule, Aurangabad, Jalna, Hingoli, Nanded, and other districts. A yellow alert has also been declared in parts of Solapur, Ahmednagar, Beed, Akola, Amravati, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, and other regions.
Mumbai rains have once again disrupted normal life, causing delays in trains, traffic congestion, and closure of schools. With a red alert in place and heavy downpours expected to continue, authorities are on high alert and citizens have been asked to remain cautious.
