Fugitive businessman Lalit Modi’s brother, Samir Modi, has been arrested in Delhi’s New Friends Colony police station limits on rape charges, according to Delhi Police.
Samir was detained at the Delhi airport upon his return from abroad, after which he was produced in court and sent to police custody. The arrest follows an ongoing investigation into the longstanding case, police sources informed IANS. Samir is scheduled to be produced before the court again on Friday.
Samir, the Executive Director of Modi Enterprises, has long been at the centre of a family and corporate feud within the Modi business empire and the Rs 11,000-crore inheritance left by his father and industrialist KK Modi, according to the Economic Times. He is the son of Godfrey Phillips India chairperson Bina Modi.
He is the youngest of three siblings, including former IPL chairman Lalit Modi and businesswoman Charu Modi. Samir was removed from the board of the company in August last year after a bitter fallout with his mother and other directors.
The family feud spilt in the open in May 2024 when Samir alleged that his mother’s security officer (PSO) and certain directors of Godfrey Phillips inflicted “grievous hurt" on him when he attempted to enter a scheduled board meeting in June 2024.
He stated that despite being assaulted and suffering a broken index finger, he attended the meeting and sought medical attention afterward. A spokesperson for Godfrey Phillips dismissed the allegations as “entirely false and atrocious," noting that the incident was captured on the company’s in-house CCTV cameras.
Samir Modi complained to Delhi police against his mother on May 31. He was accused of defamation by three independent directors of Godfrey Phillips, who alleged that their reputations were damaged due to the claims made by Samir. However, a south Delhi court freed him of the charges in May this year.
