Authorities in Montreal are investigating a deadly shooting that left a police officer and a civilian dead, with investigators examining an alleged 104-page manifesto believed to have been written by the gunman.
The attack took place on June 22 in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges district. Police responded to reports of a firearm being seen from a hotel window before an exchange of gunfire occurred. The suspected shooter was killed during the incident.
Montreal police officer Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, was killed in the line of duty. Another officer was injured and later reported to be in stable condition. Civilian victim Michael Moshe Mizrahi also died in the shooting. Authorities have described the incident as a tragedy and continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
According to multiple media reports, investigators recovered a manifesto of more than 100 pages that allegedly contained misogynistic views and references to ideologies associated with the "incel" (involuntary celibate) movement. The document reportedly discussed grievances related to relationships, male loneliness, pornography, and broader social issues, while also expressing anti-feminist and anti-capitalist views. Experts who reviewed descriptions of the document said it appeared to contain repeated calls for violence.
Law enforcement officials are analyzing the manifesto as part of their effort to determine the motive behind the attack. Authorities have not yet released the shooter's identity publicly, and no final conclusions regarding motive have been announced.
The shooting has prompted reactions from political leaders across Canada. Prime Minister Mark Carney and Quebec officials expressed condolences to the victims' families and support for the officers who responded to the scene. Flags were lowered to half-staff in parts of the province as a mark of respect.
The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to review evidence, including the alleged manifesto, and reconstruct the events leading up to the shooting.
