The Navi Mumbai Police has registered an FIR against a social media user for allegedly creating an AI-generated video showing a shoe thrown at Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan Gavai with an attempt to hurt the sentiments of people belonging to the Scheduled Caste.
The development came after the Punjab Police registered multiple FIRs against individuals accused of posting objectionable and casteist remarks against the CJI on social media
In an unusual incident at the Supreme Court on Monday, a person attempted to throw a shoe at CJI BR Gavai during the morning session. The man, who was heard shouting slogans, was quickly escorted out of the courtroom by security personnel.
The individual reportedly shouted, “Sanatan Dharam ka apmaan nahi sahega Hindustan" (“India will not tolerate disrespect towards Sanatan Dharma") while being removed from the courtroom. The man was identified as advocate Rakesh Kishore.
Following the incident, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Thursday terminated the temporary membership of advocate Rakesh Kishore, who tried to hurl a shoe at the Chief Justice of India, BR Gavai, on October 6.
The incident was sparked by CJI Gavai’s comments during a case hearing on September 16, wherein the top court dismissed a plea seeking directions to reconstruct and reinstall a seven-foot idol of Lord Vishnu at the Javari Temple, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Khajuraho temple complex in Madhya Pradesh.
Turning down the plea, CJI Gavai termed it a “publicity interest litigation", saying, “This is purely publicity interest litigation. Go and ask the deity himself to do something. If you are saying that you are a strong devotee of Lord Vishnu, then you pray and do some meditation."
