NEW DELHI: As the air pollution levels in the national capital continue to remain high, education minister Atishi on Sunday said that primary schools in Delhi will stay closed till November 10.

The minister shared the information on X, formerly Twitter.

She further added that for grade 6-12, schools are being given the option of shifting to online classes.

Earlier on Friday, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal declared a holiday for all government and private primary schools in the national capital after the pollution levels plunged into the 'Severe' category.

For the sixth day on Sunday, a thick layer of haze shrouded Delhi as pollution levels reached the severe plus category due to unfavourable wind conditions, particularly calm winds conditions, particularly calm winds during the night.

Unfavorable meteorological conditions, combined with emissions from vehicles, paddy straw burning, firecrackers, and other local pollution sources, contribute to hazardous air quality levels in Delhi-NCR during the winter every year.

Experts said due to a high share of stubble burning in Delhi's air and unfavourable met conditions, no relief is expected for the next two days.

According to the Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi, the air quality is predicted to remain in the 'severe' category till November 7.

Delhi environment minister Gopal Rai has written to Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, requesting him to ban the entry of vehicles non-compliant with BS-VI norms into Delhi from neighbouring states in Delhi-NCR.

He also requested an emergency meeting of neighbouring states' environment ministers.
