The body of a first-year BTech student from KIIT was found hanging in his hostel room on Sunday, police said on Monday. The student has been identified as Rahul Yadav, a Computer Science undergraduate from Raigarh, Chhattisgarh. “His body was found hanging in the hostel room", Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Sonal Singh Parmar told reporters.

According to the ACP, the incident occurred on Sunday and the body was recovered by officers from the Infocity Police Station. The family members of the student are on their way to Bhubaneswar, the officer said.

The ACP added that police are investigating the matter from every possible angle to find out the reason behind the student’s death. The Infocity Police have begun enquiries to understand the circumstances leading to the incident.

Forensic and scientific teams have examined the hostel room, gathering possible evidence, while police are questioning hostel residents and friends to collect more information.

According to university sources, the family has reached Bhubaneswar and the post-mortem is currently underway. The university is expected to issue a detailed statement on the incident soon.

Notably, this marks the third student suicide case on the KIIT campus this year. The first incident was reported on February 16 involving a Nepalese woman student, and another Nepalese female student died on May 1.

In May, the fact-finding committee set up by the University Grants Commission (UGC) held KIIT University in Bhubaneswar responsible for the deaths of two students earlier this year. The committee stated that “illegal and unlawful activity by the university" had contributed to one of the deaths, and that the administration’s actions “amount to criminal liability."

The committee, led by Professor Nageshwar Rao, submitted its report on May 20, 2025, after visiting the campus, meeting stakeholders, and reviewing all related details.
