19 killed, 80 injured after construction crane collapse derails train in Thailand

Local police said the crane was working on a high-speed rail project when it collapsed and crashed onto the passing train. The incident caused the carriage to derail and catch fire.

At least 19 people were killed and nearly 80 were injured after a construction crane collapsed and fell on top of a train in Thailand, police said. The train was travelling from Thailand's capital, Bangkok, to the northeast region of the country.

Local police said there were more bodies in the wreckage that had yet to be pulled out.

The accident occurred on Wednesday morning in the Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, which is 230 km northeast of Bangkok. The train was bound for Ubon Ratchathani province.

Police said the crane was working on a high-speed rail project when it collapsed and crashed onto the passing train. The incident caused the carriage to derail and catch fire, news agency Reuters reported.

The fire has been doused off, and rescue work is currently underway, police said.

Transport Minister Piphat Ratchakitprakan said that there were as many as 195 people on board the train. He added that he has ordered an investigation into the accident, The Associated Press reported.
