More than 30 fishermen from Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district were allegedly attacked by a group of Sri Lankan pirates on Friday while fishing off the Coromandel coast. Out of them, 17 sustained injuries in the attack.

The fishermen, who had ventured out to sea in a fibre boat, said they were southeast of Kodiyakkarai when six men in a speedboat approached them and began assaulting them with sharp weapons.

The attackers allegedly looted GPS equipment and fishing nets before targeting several other boats in the vicinity. The stolen items are estimated to be worth around Rs 10 lakh.

Seventeen injured fishermen were admitted to the District Government Hospital after returning to shore.

Expressing shock, the fishermen claimed the attack occurred well within Indian territorial waters.

“Sri Lankan pirates attacked us, and several fishermen are now hospitalised. We urge both the state and central governments to intervene. We are currently on strike, and if such attacks continue, we will launch an indefinite protest,” said Gajendran, a fisherman from Serudhur.

In a similar incident in December last year, three Tamil Nadu fishermen sustained slash injuries after being attacked and robbed by a group of Sri Lankan pirates.
