The US Department of State on Saturday warned its citizens in Syria of an increased risk of attacks during the Eid al-Fitr holiday. The advisory cited potential threats to embassies, international organisations, and public institutions in Damascus.

The warning outlined possible methods of attack, including individual attackers, armed gunmen, and explosive devices. The US government has urged its citizens to leave Syria immediately.

The travel advisory for Syria remains at Level 4: Do Not Travel. The State Department cites the risks of terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, hostage-taking, armed conflict, and detention without due process.

The US Embassy in Damascus has been closed since 2012. The US government cannot provide routine or emergency consular services to its citizens in Syria. The Czech Republic serves as the protecting power for US interests in the country.

US citizens in Syria who need emergency assistance should contact the US Interests Section at the Czech Embassy in Damascus. The contact number within Syria is 0969-333644, while those outside Syria can call +963-969-333644. Assistance is also available via email at USIS_damascus@embassy.mzv.cz. US citizens may also call 1-888-407-4747 from the US or +1 202-501-4444 from overseas for support.

The State Department has advised US citizens to leave Syria immediately, avoid large crowds, gatherings, and demonstrations, and stay alert in locations frequented by Westerners. It has urged individuals to be prepared to shelter in place if the situation worsens, review personal security plans, and keep mobile phones charged for emergencies. It has also asked US citizens to monitor news for updates on security conditions, have a contingency plan for emergencies, and enrol in the Smart Traveller Enrolment Program (STEP) to receive alerts.

The State Department has encouraged US citizens to follow its crisis updates on WhatsApp. Notifications can be turned on by clicking the bell icon in the channel.

The warning comes as tensions in the region remain high, with concerns that the holiday period could see an increase in attacks.
