US preps for retaliatory Iran attack on Israel or its assets: Report

JJ News Desk

The US is on high alert and preparing for a “significant” attack by Iran that could come within the next week targeting Israeli or American assets in the region, an official told CNN on Friday. The anticipated attack would be in response to Israel's strike on the Iranian embassy in Syria that killed one of its top commanders.

The airstrike on the Iranian diplomatic compound in the Syrian capital killed a top Iranian Quds Force commander, General Mohammad Reza Zahedi.

Here are the top developments so far.

In a stern message to the US, a top aide to Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi asked Washington not to get involved in the fight between his nation and Israel.

In response to Mohammad Jamshidi's warning, a US State Department official said Washington "responded by warning Iran not to use this (Syria attack) as a pretext to attack US personnel and facilities".

“Don’t think about coming after us," he said, without providing details on how the administration sent its response.

US defence officials have said the military shot down two one-way attack drones near the al Tanf garrison in southern Syria, NBC News reported.

On Thursday, US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the looming threat of an Iranian retaliatory attack.
