An Indian-origin doctor has been sentenced to six months in jail in the United States after admitting to secretly recording women inside an employee restroom at a hospital in Ohio. The court also ordered him to register as a sex offender for 15 years and continue treatment for his behaviour.
According to WTOL 11 and Fox 19, Advait Deshmukh, a former medical resident at ProMedica Toledo Hospital, was sentenced in Lucas County Common Pleas Court after pleading guilty to one count of attempted tampering with evidence and seven counts of voyeurism. Along with the jail term, he was placed on three years of probation, ordered to attend Sexaholics Anonymous meetings and continue mental health and sex offender treatment.
The case surfaced in June 2025 after a hospital employee found a cellphone hidden inside a box in a unisex staff restroom at ProMedica Toledo Hospital in Ohio.
According to investigators, when another employee tried to remove the device, Deshmukh grabbed it and claimed it belonged to him.
A joint investigation by Toledo Police and ProMedica later uncovered more than 80 images on the phone that were taken between February and May 2025. Investigators identified at least six women who had been recorded without their knowledge or consent.
Police suspect there may be additional victims, as evidence suggests the recordings could have been taking place since 2018.
Before sentencing, Deshmukh apologised to the victims. His lawyer urged the court to impose probation instead of prison, saying he had been undergoing therapy to understand the seriousness of his actions and the behaviour that led to the offences.
The judge rejected the request and handed down a six-month prison sentence. Court records show Deshmukh will remain on active probation until June 2029.
The judge also noted that Deshmukh plans to relocate to Franklin County after his release. However, he will still be required to register with local authorities and comply with all court-ordered conditions.
At the time of the incident, Deshmukh was a third-year resident at the University of Toledo, specialising in endourology and urologic oncology.
Following the discovery of the hidden device, the University of Toledo placed him on administrative leave. His residency appointment was later not renewed after an internal investigation.
