In a significant win for President Donald Trump, the US Congress on Thursday passed his sweeping USD 4.5 trillion ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ of tax cuts and spending reductions, with the Republican-led House narrowly passing the bill 218–214 and sending it to him for signing.
The vote marks a major legislative victory for the president in his second term, securing funding for his immigration crackdown, making his 2017 tax cuts permanent, and delivering new tax breaks he pledged during his 2024 campaign. The White House announced that President Trump will sign the bill into law on Friday at 5 pm.
Trump called the passage of ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ a historic achievement, saying, “The biggest bill of its kind ever signed — and it's going to make this country into a rocket ship. It's going to be really great.”
Praising the sweeping USD 3.4 trillion tax and spending package, Trump added, “I think when you go over the bill, it was very easy to get them to a 'Yes.' ... Biggest tax cut in history, great for security, great on the southern border ... we covered just about everything. Again, it's the biggest bill ever signed of its kind.”
Following the bill’s passage, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated during a press call: “The one ‘big, beautiful bill’ has passed the House of Representatives and will be at the president’s desk for signature at a big, beautiful signing ceremony tomorrow at 5 pm on the Fourth of July, just as the president always said and hoped it would be.”
Reacting to the passage of the bill, US Vice President JD Vance said, "Congrats to everyone. At times I even doubted we’d get it done by July 4! But now we’ve delivered big tax cuts and the resources necessary to secure the border. Promises made, promises kept."
The path to passage of the bill was rocky. The legislation, an 800-plus-page package, represents a major victory for the president in his second term. It bundles a wide range of conservative priorities, with GOP leaders working through the night and Trump personally pressuring holdouts to secure enough votes.
Despite clearing the House, the bill could face political consequences. The narrow margin of passage highlights deepening rifts within the Republican Party, while Democrats are likely to seize on the legislation as a key campaign issue heading into the next election.
Trump’s new tax and spending bill, dubbed the ‘Big Beautiful Bill,’ is a sweeping legislative package that combines permanent tax cuts with major boosts in federal spending, particularly on defence, border security, and energy, while making cuts to social safety net programs.
At the heart of the bill is a push to make the 2017 Trump-era tax cuts permanent, as they are currently set to expire at the end of 2025. Alongside the extended tax breaks, the bill significantly boosts funding for border security, the military, and energy projects.
One of the most prominent features of the bill is a USD 350 billion border and national security plan. This includes USD 46 billion to expand the US-Mexico border wall, USD 45 billion for 100,000 migrant detention beds, and a hiring blitz for immigration enforcement, including 10,000 new ICE officers, each receiving a USD 10,000 signing bonus.
Despite claims from Trump, the bill does not repeal taxes on Social Security benefits.
