On Wednesday, Legha Pawan was sentenced to two years and 11 months by Singapore’s justice system after pleading guilty to a charge of voluntarily causing harm which led to grievous results.
Prosecutors pressed for the fact that Pawan’s action on the day of June 30, 2024 were unprovoked and were conducted without any specific reason. The victim, Jasbir Singh was an Indian national. He was married and father of two, as he worked as a construction worker in Singapore.
The accused, Legha Pawan is a 22 year old student who received a lot of heat from the public for his actions. Pawan was a student at Birmingham Academy at the time of the incident.
On June 30 of the previous year, Pawan and some of his friends were drinking near Clarke Quay. Pawan returned alone to the riverside when he allegedly pushed Singh - without any clear motive.
Due to his intoxicated state, a friend had to intervene before Pawan engaged in a dispute. Singh was dealing with heavy alcohol use following his mother’s unfortunate passing. As Singh was walking alone along the riverside, at 10:30 p.m Pawan approached Jasbir Singh once again. This time, several passersby noticed the conflict taking place as well.
Pawan, in the moment, pushed Singh, who fell into the river and drowned. A panicked Pawan fled the area. He returned to his apartment around 8 a.m. the next day, where police arrested him.
The next day at 8 a.m Pawan was arrested by the local police.
