Russian President Vladimir Putin met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar at the Kremlin on Monday, as India and Russia discussed ways to deepen cooperation across several key sectors.
The meeting comes amid continued efforts by New Delhi and Moscow to expand their longstanding strategic partnership, with trade, energy, fertilisers and nuclear cooperation featuring prominently in discussions.
Jaishankar conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s greetings to Putin and handed over a personal message from the Indian Prime Minister.
Welcoming Jaishankar to Moscow, Putin said the minister’s visit reflected the strength of relations between India and Russia, which he described as having developed over several decades.
Putin also pointed to continued cooperation through government, parliamentary and economic channels.
According to Russian state media, the Russian president said bilateral trade had continued to grow in 2026, with cooperation expanding across almost all major areas.
Jaishankar highlighted the recent meeting of the India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission, saying it had produced a positive assessment of bilateral cooperation.
He pointed to progress in several areas, including trade, energy, fertilisers and nuclear cooperation.
India, he said, was keen to build on this momentum and further expand economic engagement with Russia.
Fertiliser supplies emerged as one of the key points during the meeting.
Putin said Russia was prepared to increase supplies to India to support the country's agricultural requirements.
Moscow, he said, was working to address India's fertiliser needs and was ready to increase supplies further.
The issue remains significant for India, where stable access to fertilisers is important for agricultural production and food security.
The meeting also touched upon upcoming high-level engagements between Modi and Putin.
Jaishankar said Modi was looking forward to meeting Putin at the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.
He also conveyed Modi’s expectation of welcoming Putin to India for the BRICS Summit.
The two leaders are also expected to hold their annual summit at a mutually convenient time.
Jaishankar said the two countries had a strong record of cooperation to present, signalling that New Delhi and Moscow intend to maintain momentum in their longstanding partnership.
The Kremlin meeting underlines the continued breadth of India-Russia cooperation, even as both countries seek to expand economic engagement beyond traditional areas.
With trade, energy, fertilisers and nuclear cooperation on the table, the focus remains on turning the longstanding political relationship into deeper economic and strategic cooperation.
